SummaryThe course is intended to provide an introduction to Christian theology through an examination of the ideas of a selection of key figures and a number of key themes. During the classes, students will be introduced to an overview of the theologians and themes, as well as being encouraged to engage in detail with specific primary sources in translation.
Course description The course will focus on the themes covered in Part III of McGrath's Christian Theology: an Introduction (currently, fifth edition, although the course will follow any minor changes in subsequent editions). Over the ten weeks, the following issues will be addressed:

The Doctrine of God;
The Doctrine of the Trinity;
The Doctrine of the Person of Christ;
Faith and History: The Christological Agenda of Modernity;
The Doctrine of Salvation in Christ;
The Doctrines of Human Nature, Sin, and Grace;
The Doctrine of the Church;
The Doctrine of the Sacraments;
Christianity and the World Religions;
The Last Things: The Christian Hope.


The aim will be to provide a general overview of the area under consideration, together with a specific focus on one aspect of or debate within the area. Students will be introduced to issues of history and methodology dealt with in parts I and II of the textbook.
Engagement with primary sources, textual and material, will be encouraged through use of online materials, audio visual material and handouts.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a broad knowledge of some key ideas in Christian theology.
  2. Demonstrate an awareness of the diversity of Christian thought and its development.
  3. Use some of the basic skills, techniques and practices associated generally with reading theological texts.
  4. Present and evaluate some central arguments and ideas of Christian theology.
