SummaryThis four-week full-time course is the final course of our 10-week suite of EAP Pre-sessional courses. It is for international students intending to study on an MBA or Business Masters programme at University of Edinburgh Business School. The focus is on the development of skills and confidence in using English for active participation on a Business Masters programme. Postgraduate business studies in the UK places demands on students' ability to
read and comprehend a wide variety of academic and business texts, including the business and financial press, business reports, business case studies, academic business journals and textbooks. The course will give students practice in these reading skills in addition to developing speaking and listening skills for interactive lecture and seminar participation and writing skills for producing academic assignments. Invited guest speakers from the Business School and local businesses will speak on topics relevant to business students to develop lecture listening and seminar participation skills.
Course description This four-week full-time course is the final course of our 10-week suite of EAP Pre-sessional courses. 2) Outline Content
The course comprises the following components:
- English for Business Masters Reading and Writing Skills: Practice in reading for and writing academic assignments
for the MBA. Students will write two assignments comprising of an essay and a case study analysis.
- Business Communication Skills: Development of core business communication skills, including giving presentations, participating in meetings, and negotiating.
- Business Topics: Development of English language skills through the exploration of key business topics. These will include presentations by guest lecturers relating to key English for Business Masters and other business topics and video material, including an MBA class in action.
- Team Projects: Participants will work in teams on three micro-projects, leading to group presentations.
- Language Review: Language review sessions focus on the language used in the lecture room including strategies and skills for effective participation as well as core business and management vocabulary.
- There is an emphasis on the development of both academic writing skills and oral presentation skills with opportunities for both individual and team work. A series of talks by guest speakers and video sessions is programmed to develop listening skills.

3) Student Learning Experience
The course is delivered by a course director who is responsible for the operational management of the course; course tutors, who work with two classes of up to fourteen students; and guest lecturers who give lectures on business topics of relevance and interest to students embarking on Business Masters studies.
Students spend most of each teaching day in class groups with tutors and are expected to actively participate in pair work, group work, role plays and plenary class sessions. Each class group has two tutors, one for the academic reading and writing component and one for business communication skills, presentation and vocabulary development sessions. There is a Guest Lecture each week.

Additional Information (Assessment) Students undertake three summative assessments during the course:
- Reading-into-Writing, in the form of an 1500 word source-based written assignment
- Speaking, in the form of a ten-minute individual oral presentation
- Listening in the form of a summary and viva
Students will be awarded a grade for each assessment derived from our internally-developed marking schemes that draw on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) - an international standard for describing language ability.
Feedback Detailed written formative feedback given by tutors on an interim submission (partial draft) of Written Assignment. General formative peer and tutor feedback on full first draft. General summative comments on final assessed draft.
Oral peer and tutor formative feedback on presentation practice tasks. General summative comments on assessed Individual Presentations.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Research and write an 1800 word academic business essay drawing on appropriately selected and integrated academic source material, and making effective use of peer and tutor formative feedback on drafts
  2. Research, prepare and effectively deliver a 10-minute individual oral presentation on a business-related topic and respond appropriately to questions
  3. Actively participate in group discussion on a variety of business topics
  4. Appropriately use a range of general business vocabulary
  5. Progress onto their Edinburgh degree programme with confidence in their EAP skills.
