SummaryThis course reviews the process of assessing a patient's oral health with particular reference to adopting a consistent and reproducible process that is based on current guidelines and clinical scientific evidence.
Course description Using a mixture of video recorded lectures, tutor-led discussion, case material and group project work, this course includes the following topics;
Oral health assessment
Assessment of dental anxiety
Orthodontic treatment needs assessment
Caries assessment and risk
Periodontal disease assessment and risk
Soft tissue examination
Extra-oral examination
History taking
Review of the common oral diseases and their diagnosis

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Develop a reproducible system for carrying out an oral health assessment, an assessment of dental anxiety, and an orthodontic treatment need assessment and recording it in a patient record as a group project using the Wiki.
  2. Demonstrate an ability to elicit and record a full dental, medical and social history and to understand the implications for patient management and record this in a case report.
  3. Recognise and assess the common dental diseases which affect the teeth and supporting structures, using the most appropriate examination techniques and special investigations relevant to patient age and co-operation and demonstrate this in a clinical case report.
  4. Critically appraise the relevant clinical scientific literature supporting the current concepts of management of the common dental diseases and compare various behavioural management techniques on the tutor-led discussion board.
