SummaryThis course will explore the relevant scientific literature and appraise the current concepts of prevention and management of dental caries.
Course description The course will use recorded lectures, directed reading, tutor-led discussion, group project work all supported by specific learning tasks.
The topics will include prevention of dental caries in primary dental care, public health aspects of prevention of dental caries, management of dental caries in the child and adolescent, management of dental caries for adult patients, operative techniques for dental caries, preventive restorations, direct restorations, isolation techniques, cavity preparation, use of dental matrices, dental materials for direct restorations, aspects of dental anatomy associated with dental caries

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Be competent in the preventive management and operative management of dental caries, having an awareness of both conventional and alternative techniques, and demonstrate this in a case report.
  2. Discuss and challenge the efficacy of restorative management of dental caries in the light of current scientific evidence and be able to discuss public dental health reports and data for dental caries using the tutor-led discussion board.
  3. Apply the principles of self-evaluation in clinical procedures and be able to critically reflect on the quality of their own clinical work and record this reflection in a case report and in ePortfolio entries.
  4. Discuss the properties of the dental materials used to directly restore teeth and those used for preventive interventions and make a judgement on selecting one material over another using the tutor-led discussion board.
  5. Assess the micro-anatomy of enamel and dentine and how this influences the bonding of restorative materials to these structures and define the terminology as a group project using a Wiki and in the final assessment.
