SummaryThis course is designed to help postgraduate students to appreciate the indications for the replacement of missing teeth in the partially dentate patient.
Course description The course will use recorded lectures, directed reading, tutor-led discussion, group project work all supported by specific learning tasks.
It will review treatment planning skills and help students to be able to evaluate the merits of the various types of partial prostheses.
It will also facilitate the provision of removable chrome-cobalt partial dentures and tooth-supported fixed bridgework. Finally it will review the indications and contraindications for implant retained prosthesis and review the treatment planning required for these restorations.

Feedback Students receive informal feedback/ feed forward from their on-line tutor on a weekly basis. Students receive formal feedback at the end of each semester on assessed course-work and written assignments.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Critically evaluate the treatment planning dilemmas associated with restoring patients with missing teeth and apply to clinical scenarios.
  2. Analyse the importance of communication in patient-led plans for treatment and be able to demonstrate the discussion of treatment options.
  3. Demonstrate the technical understanding of an appropriate design for a partial denture and critically analyse methods for communicating this design to dental team members.
  4. Critically evaluate the assessment of patients for dental implants and develop a process for planning the prosthodontic stages of treatment.
  5. Apply the principles of self-evaluation in restorative procedures recognising personal skill limitations and demonstrate this in a written reflective account of progress within this course of study.
