SummaryThis course enables students to apply their musical knowledge and skills within the community.
The ethos is founded on the premise of building collaborative and communication skills directed towards work with individuals and groups; encouraging enjoyment of music, musicianship, musical creativity, therapeutic intervention and learning.
Course description Music in the Community emerges at an influential meeting point of a number of diverse concerns, including performance arts outreach, community development, creative arts therapies, music education and conflict resolution. This course will encourage students to apply and broaden their musical knowledge and skills usefully in a variety of community settings; within education, elderly care, special educational needs, prisons.
Students will participate in fortnightly workshops/seminars delivered by the course organizer and specialists in the field of community music.The workshops will cover a broad range of musical and collaborative activity; creative and improvisational skills; the study of Latin American styles and West Africa drumming; song repertoire from around the world; use of play, performance in a community context, cross art collaboration; developing original workshop methodology.

Pre-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students have passed Performance and Keyboard 2 (MUSI08049) OR Practical Music Workshops (MUSI08062)

Additional Information (Assessment) Summative Assessment

1.Placement Assessment: creative project portfolio (60%)

Key ¿ingredients¿ of successful practices across demographic, geographic, cultural, and contextual
variations. These enable better understanding, planning, execution and evaluation of community
music activities. Students will build on their practical experience in semester 1.

The creative project portfolio must contain the following:

(1) Your 4 recorded workshops (30 minutes in length maximum) for your placement provider, with accompanying teacher notes/instructions, worksheets, visual materials as would have been provided to placement.

Video sessions will be submitted fortnightly to tutors who will offer feedback and developmental advice in weekly tutorials.

The timetable for submission is:

22/03/2021 - Video 4

These will then be compiled with any accompanying materials into a project pack to be provided to your placement.

(2) In week 11 you will submit a 15 minute presentation online/ or live which will distil the essence of your project demonstrating the different elements of your artistic practice.

(3) As a group you will also submit 2 sides of A4 which describes the project rationale and overview.


2. Essay: 5,000-word essay (40%).

Each student will reflect on their placement in either the social or educational sector.

Students will be required to keep a reflective diary which should include; Workshop plans, weekly reporting on progress and issues arising, which will form the basis of their essay submission. The essay should evaluate, reflect and analyse the placement with an emphasis on methodological insights.

Supporting documentation required- transcriptions, annotated musical tasks and recordings if appropriate.

Feedback Throughout the academic year students will receive oral and formative feedback in 1-2-1 or small group sessions. These will take place before or after the weekly placement. Post-assessment visit the students will receive written feedback on placement feedback sheet. In Semester 1 this will indicate progress and areas for development.
Students will also receive regular advice and feedback by email if they should wish, in respect to their plans for placement sessions.
During practical workshops students will receive formative feedback from the course organiser, visiting specialists and their peers.
They will receive written feedback on the assessed essay including comments on the accompanying feedback sheet.

Placement: Students will receive group assessment by CO and Tutors in semester 1 - plus 1 to 1 formative feedback session - CO.

Written feedback will be provided for each component of summative assessment within 15 working days.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a developing understanding of Community Music Practice
  2. Gain experience in developing their creative and improvisational skills with individuals and groups.
  3. Engage critically with their musical experience on placement.
  4. Analyse and evaluate their own placement work and reflect on its outcomes
