SummaryThis is a core course in year 2 of the Bachelor of Nursing with Honours (Adult) programme. It aims to provide students with an understanding of qualitative and quantitative approaches to research, and the key characteristics of common research designs applicable to nursing and healthcare, (qualitative, quantitative and participatory approaches) linked to the theories that underpin them. Sampling and data collection methods will be introduced. An understanding of research governance, ethics and user involvement will be developed.
Course description This course aims to provide students with an understanding of qualitative and quantitative approaches to research, and the key characteristics of common research designs applicable to nursing and healthcare, (qualitative quantitative and participatory approaches) linked to the theories that underpin them. Sampling and data collection methods will be introduced. An understanding of research governance, ethics and user involvement will be developed.

The course will include:
An introduction to the philosophical and theoretical foundations of knowledge
An introduction to research designs and approaches to develop practice: experimental; evaluation and audit; surveys; grounded theory, ethnography and phenomenology; mixed methods; participatory action research; critical realist.
Ethical dimensions, research governance and user involvement in gathering evidence and ways of evaluating rigour and sources of bias.

The course will adopt a student-centered learning approach with a mix of inputs. These will range from lectures including flipped lectures, research examples, practical research skills sessions and workbooks, class discussions and tutorials. Students will demonstrate their achievement of the learning outcomes through the group presentation and coursework assignment.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate understanding and application of the main research designs and approaches used to gather evidence in health and social care.
  2. Identify and understand the role of different sampling and data collection methods that contribute to the generation of evidence-based practice.
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of ethics, research governance and user involvement in gathering evidence and ways of evaluating its rigour and application.

Graduate Attributes and Skills This course will stimulate the students curiosity for learning about evidence that supports their practice and methods of enquiry that generate such evidence. It will help them become creative problem solvers and researchers able to critically reflect on their learning and practice. They will develop their skills in communication, presenting concepts in a clear and understandable way.
