Course description |
This course will cover the basics of orthodontic problems, the aetiology of malocclusion, clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning
It will include the following topics:
Aetiology of malocclusion
Normal dental and craniofacial development.
Growth and treatment Analysis
Diagnostic procedures
Cephalometry
Space analysis
Treatment planning
Teaching and communication
Functional appliances.
Airway, craniofacial development and malocclusion
Tooth movement and facial orthopaedics
Basics of fixed appliances and self ligation.
Management of impacted teeth
Class I malocclusions
Class II malocclusions
Class III malocclusions
Extraction / nonextraction treatment
Oral Health and orthodontic indices
Extra-oral appliances
Introduction to orthognathic treatment.
TMD and orthodontics

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Evaluate and discuss the aetiology of malocclusion and demonstrate an understanding of the main classifications of malocclusion.
- Demonstrate an ability to apply diagnostic patient data gathering to clinical cases and evaluate the information gathered with a view to planning orthodontic treatment.
- Critically appraise the scientific literature surrounding treatment planning dilemmas in orthodontics and apply the findings in a clinical situation.
- Apply the principles of self-evaluation in clinical procedures and be able to critically reflect on the quality of their own clinical work and record this in a reflective account.
- Demonstrate an ability to use a wide range of orthodontic treatment techniques to solve common clinical presentations of malocclusion and tooth alignment.
