| Summary | This course is designed to instruct students in standard edgewise technique which forms the basis of all contemporary orthodontic treatment, and to apply these principles to contemporary pre-adjusted edgewise technique. |

The course will cover three days of fulltime instruction and includes:
History of fixed appliance treatment: development of the edgewise appliance
First, second, and third order bends
Pre-adjusted appliance evolution ¿ advantages and disadvantages
Andrews Six Keys
Edgewise brackets - sliding mechanics
Anchorage in edgewise
Space closing loops
Formation of arch blanks
Artistic bends
Utility arches
Round wire exercises
Typodont exercises

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Evaluate and discuss the history of fixed appliance treatment and the development of the edgewise appliance and demonstrate an understanding of the mechanics of the modern edgewise appliance.
- Demonstrate an ability to apply the standard edgewise technique for fixed appliance orthodontic treatment in a range of simulated cases.
- Critically appraise the scientific literature surrounding the pre-adjusted orthodontic fixed appliance and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these appliances.
- Apply the principles of self-evaluation in clinical procedures and be able to critically reflect on the quality of their own clinical work and record this in a reflective account.
- Demonstrate an ability to use a wide range of wire bending techniques to solve common clinical presentations of malocclusion and tooth alignment.
