Course description |
This course will cover more advanced topics in orthodontic specialist training, building on year 1 of the SWOP programme and will include:
Iatrogenic effects of orthodontics.
Interceptive Orthodontics
Removable Appliances
Orthognathic surgery
Cleft management and treatment
Indices of treatment need and standards
Teaching and communication
Long term effects of orthodontics.
Adult Orthodontics
Orthodontic retention
Orthodontic materials and biomechanics.
Archwires and archform
Oral health and orthodontic indices
Management, ethics & responsibilities
Dental and facial asymmetry
Hypodontia management.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Evaluate and discuss the long term and iatrogenic effects of orthodontic treatment and demonstrate skills in patient communication.
- Demonstrate an ability to apply the techniques for designing and adjusting removable orthodontic appliances in a range of clinical cases.
- Critically appraise the scientific literature surrounding cleft management and treatment and apply this knowledge in clinical situations.
- Apply the principles of self-evaluation in clinical procedures and be able to critically reflect on the quality of their own clinical work and record this in a reflective account.
- Demonstrate an ability to use a wide range of orthodontic materials and techniques to solve common clinical presentations of malocclusion and tooth alignment in adult patients.
