SummaryThe course will introduce the students to the theory and practice of operating ferementers under pressure, whilst controlling temperature, pH, oxygen concentration (or anaerobic growth), mixing rate and other growth conditions. These fermentation practicals will grow, bacteria (E.coli), yeast (P.pastoris) and probably also halophillic bacteria The practical fermenter training will be supplemented with visits to industrial facilities.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Develop key practical skills in fermenting biotechnology and better understand operations and commercial opportunities in fermentation-based biotechnology
  2. Increase their understanding that 'industrial biotechnology' is based on using machines to control the growth of microorganisms
  3. Develop knowledge of a variety of fermentation strategies
  4. Analyse potential business opportunities in fermentation-based biotechnology
  5. Explore the biological and technological principles which govern actual and potential bio-business
