Course description |
The 'Telescope Group Project' is exactly what its name suggests. Students will work in groups, typically between 4 and 6, to carry out a project based around the Institute for Astronomy's 20-inch telescope. The datasets obtained will be combined with data from the literature in order to derive a fundamental measurement. Students will be given a choice from different projects and will plan, carry out, and analyse the observations and literature data. Their results will be presented both as a written report and an oral presentation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Work efficiently as part of a team, to carry out an advanced, multi-faceted project.
- Plan and execute imaging observations of an astronomical target, and carry out a detailed analysis of the resultant data.
- Prepare a full report, written at a level readily understood by other Senior Honours Physics students, which includes a concise summary of the relevant literature, the pertinent aspects of the method, and a critical discussion of the results and conclusions.
- Present this same material in the form of a short oral presentation, as if at a conference, and respond to questions relating to this material.
