SummaryThis is a group project for Senior Honours students on the Astrophysics degree programmes, using the IfA's 20-inch telescope.
Course description The 'Telescope Group Project' is exactly what its name suggests. Students will work in groups, typically between 4 and 6, to carry out a project based around the Institute for Astronomy's 20-inch telescope. The datasets obtained will be combined with data from the literature in order to derive a fundamental measurement. Students will be given a choice from different projects and will plan, carry out, and analyse the observations and literature data. Their results will be presented both as a written report and an oral presentation.

Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Observational Astronomy (PHYS09059)
Co-requisites It is RECOMMENDED that students also take Astrophysics (PHYS10102)
Prohibited Combinations Students MUST NOT also be taking Group Project (PHYS11011)
Other requirements Only for students on the 4th year of the following programmes:

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Work efficiently as part of a team, to carry out an advanced, multi-faceted project.
  2. Plan and execute imaging observations of an astronomical target, and carry out a detailed analysis of the resultant data.
  3. Prepare a full report, written at a level readily understood by other Senior Honours Physics students, which includes a concise summary of the relevant literature, the pertinent aspects of the method, and a critical discussion of the results and conclusions.
  4. Present this same material in the form of a short oral presentation, as if at a conference, and respond to questions relating to this material.
