| Course description |
This course will be taught entirely by online distance learning, using the virtual learning environment Learn as the delivery platform. Students will work individually and in groups, interacting via discussion boards.
The course will include basic principles of communicable diseases epidemiology and control including surveillance, investigation, control and prevention and their application to specific communicable diseases in the UK and internationally. It will discuss the principles of vaccination and immunisation programmes including methods for monitoring and evaluation. It will also introduce students to key concepts in environmental public health and the principles used to investigate and control environmental health hazards.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a critical understanding of the significance of communicable disease as a public health issue, the epidemiology of important communicable diseases and the principles of surveillance, investigation, control and prevention of communicable diseases in the UK and internationally.
- Critically apply the principles of investigating an outbreak of communicable disease including different control methods available.
- Describe and evaluate the principles underlying vaccination and immunisation and the methods for monitoring and evaluating immunisation programmes.
