| Summary | The social history of sport has long since been established as a subject of scholarly enquiry and research in UK universities, within the Institute's programme. This module provides for a detailed social historical analysis of sports since the late eighteenth century, setting activities in the context of the broader social and economic changes in Scottish society. It examines the evolution, diffusion and marginalisation of forms of sport in Scotland. Case studies will include the development and codification of golf, and the Empire and Commonwealth Games. The objective of the module is to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the place of sport in Scottish, British and European social history. |

Historical method and guide to relevant sporting manuscripts
Sport on the internet: researching historical material
Mode/delivery:
Lectures, seminars, case studies, supported self-study, individual and group discussion on specific topics.
