Summary | To promote an understanding of the scientific basis underlying the the processing and testing of blood donations and other tissues, as well as the risks, ethics and governance issues surrounding these. |
Course description |
The course will help the student to understand the basis, and application, of serological and nucleic acid test for the detection of transfusion transmitted infection, including the role of confirmatory tests and reference microbiology laboratories. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and the steps taken to reduce risk of its transmission are included. This will involve understanding testing blood donations for blood groups, and the approach to preparation and assessment of reagents for these tests, the preparation and quality control of components from blood donations and the principles of risk management and hazard reporting, European and UK regulations relevant to these fields and the approaches used to ensure appropriate and effective use of blood and its components in patients.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
