SummaryThis course takes an exhilarating ride through agri-food systems. It looks beyond the farm gate to consider the life cycle of food in its complexities. The course will be taught through a range of in-depth case studies covering issues from social equity to micronutrient deficiencies to analyse agri-food systems.

The course will be taught in blocks - the first introducing the case study and the second will be student led analysis of this case study

Course description This course will consist of case-studies developing the knowledge set introduced in the Year 3 course 'Sustainable Agri-food Systems: Development and Evaluation' covering topics such as : Land rights case studies in South America; Natural resource governance in Scotland (land water, government, labour, trade offs); Scientific innovation for peasant farms in China; research and development projects funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Analyse a series of case studies against a range of sustainability frameworks including the SDGs
  2. Identify opportunities for future innovation or improvement within case-studies, with a focus on the challenges of poverty, equity, food security, and human health and planetary health.
  3. Describe trade-offs and synergies for sustainability within every case-study.
  4. Analyse the contested discourses surrounding food systems.
