SummaryThis course offers an introduction to landscape architecture history in different epochs and geographical regions. It has a particular focus on European history.
Course description This course offers an introduction to landscape architecture history in Europe and to key historical elements in other parts of the world, normally including North America and Asia. It is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials, and fieldwork.

The Introduction to History of Landscape Architecture covers the early beginnings; the hydraulic civilizations of Mesopotamia, Persia and Egypt; the classical and the mediaeval gardens in Europe; expressions of the Renaissance and Baroque in garden design; the eighteenth century English Landscape Garden tradition, including the work of Kent, Brown and Repton; the Picturesque; the early parks movement in Britain; Loudon and the Gardenesque; gardens of the Arts and Crafts Movement; and a short overview of contemporary trends in landscape design. It also takes an international perspective to cover key design traditions in one or more of the following: northern India, China, Japan and North America.

Essay (30% LO2, 40% LO3)

One single submission containing two distinct components (100%):
a) Sketchbook due in Examination Period;
b) Final submission of 3,000-word essay due in Examination Period.
Component (a) is marked against LO1. Component (b) is marked against LOs 2 and 3. LO1 and LO2 are each weighted 30%, LO3 is weighting 40%.
Feedback Formative feedback will be given during the external field study visit, after an initial hand-in of study tour notebooks, and via tutorials.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Undertake visual analysis through the medium of sketching, notes and brief commentary of historic examples of architecture and landscape architecture.
  2. Demonstrate a broad understanding of selected historical eras, styles, traditions and movements in architecture and landscape architecture.
  3. Demonstrate written communication skills via a critical and reflective approach to understanding particular historic examples of architecture and landscape architecture
