Summary | This course provides an introduction to research methods in the area of digital media and culture. Four seminars set the research context for a directed reading course examining theoretical and philosophical issues pertaining to media, culture, computing, visual and interaction design, sound design, music, film, visuality or other areas agreed between the student and a supervisor. |
Course description |
This course will give students a general introduction to research, its methodologies, its challenges and its organization, with particular emphasis on emerging methods for researching digital social media and of using such media in research. Students will be supplied with reading material to be discussed in seminar-style classes. They will also develop their skills by preparing and writing a research proposal and writing up a preliminary research investigation.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Write, present and converse knowledgeably and critically on current social, cultural and theoretical issues in digital media
- Compare and evaluate different theoretical positions
- Evaluate critically methods of using digital social media in research
- Prepare for a self-directed programme of theoretical investigation
- Demonstrate detailed familiarity with at least 6 key texts in the areas of digital media and culture
