| Course description |
By the early eighteenth century the search for definitive cultural precedents brought British architects to the European continent where they studied the buildings of early western civilisation in Rome, and later at the Greek fountainhead. Influenced by these Classical models architects returned to Britain and adapted concepts of the Antique to their own styles. This course will study the Palladians, James Gibbs, the impact of the Grand Tour, the neo-classicism of both William Chambers and Robert Adam, architectural publications, the Greek Revival, the Picturesque Movement and will culminate with an analysis of the personal style of Soane, whose eclecticism foreshadowed the architectural debates of the nineteenth century.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an extensive knowledge and understanding of the Architecture of Georgian Britain and its historiography
- Demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the theoretical and philosophical context in which architecture was made in the Georgian period
- Demonstrate the ability to construct a sophisticated art and architectural-historical argument, informed by a critical analysis of primary sources and secondary sources
