SummaryThis course offers students an historical overview of the history of architectural theory, primarily through texts and documents.
Course description This course introduces students to the key ideas that have shaped the conception of architecture from antiquity to the recent past. It will require students to engage with the logical constitution of architectural theory, and the debates that have unfolded over the course of centuries about the nature of architecture. Particular attention will be devoted to the close reading of texts and artefacts (drawings, projects, buildings) that have offered definitions of architecture and its practice. We will also consider the relationship of architectural theory to broader philosophical debates.
