| Summary | This exploration of the Artists Book aims to introduce students to the conceptual and practical aspects of the Artists book and includes instruction in bookbinding and printing and publication potentials.
Theoretical aspects of this course require students to consider:
+ The history of book art, especially its development and singular status in the 20th Century as well as its current revival.
+ Its particular role as an aesthetic, philosophical, political and self-reflexive mode of artistic production which straddles the sphere of art and popular culture.
+ Book art's contextualization within the practice and theory of the multiple in post-war and contemporary art.
+ The relation of craft and technology to contemporary art practice.
The course will start with structured classes, research and introductions to key works from a range of sources.
Students will be asked to consider the nature of the book in relation to:
+ Structure
+ Narrative
+ Form
+ Dissemination / Distribution
+ Content
+ Making.

| Course description |
The course follows a practice based / research model.
The course launches with a lecture outlining historical and contemporary approaches to the artists¿ book. Students will then receive instruction in simple binding techniques and be set a series of short projects offering insights into different modes of working and conceptual considerations. Seminars and group meetings will offer forums for discussion and sharing across the cohort.
Each student will consolidate a personally driven project during the second part of the course.
Aims of the course:
To introduce students to the conceptual and practical aspects of the artists¿ book.
To engage students in the process of making the book, from initial concept though development of narrative, sequence, construction, surface, form, means of production, editions and publication.

On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
