SummaryThis practice-based course will provide students with an overview of the use of the textile in contemporary art practice. Through a series of lectures, external visits, practical workshops and independent learning through making and thinking, students will consider how and why textiles in their broadest sense are used in artworks and gain an understanding of the currency of these languages within current art practice.
Course description Throughout the course students will be introduced to artists who have utilised textiles in their practice and will consider both the historical and contemporary contexts in which they have operated. It will provide students with a framework for exploring the textile from a creative and critical perspective. Students will look at the readymade and handmade, the constructed and found object as well as mechanical and digital production. There will be external visits to the National Museum of Scotland textile collection at Granton and to the Dovecot, as well as practical workshops and artist's talks. The focus will be on individual learning through making and students will be encouraged to experiment with various processes and techniques, whilst considering the implications of the materials and tools employed in the production of artworks.
