SummaryAs continuation of Chinese 1, the key aim of this course is to develop students' communicative competence in Chinese to intermediate level and to enable them to understand and use Chinese grammar in everyday conversations, read contemporary literary and journalistic texts without excessive use of the dictionary (in both simplified and traditional characters) and write simple letters and essays. The course will also help students prepare for their Year Abroad in China/Taiwan.
Please note this course is not available to native or near-native speakers of Chinese.
Course description The course consists of 5 components:

1) New Practical Chinese Reader Vol. II and Vol. III (NPCR)
2) Chinese for Year Abroad
3) Reading & Composition
4) Grammar
5) Oral

New Practical Chinese Reader (NPCR, Books 2 and 3) tutorials
This class aims to help Students' language skills to achieve to intermediate level in a series of graded steps, covering grammar, vocabulary and day-to-day knowledge of life in China.

Chinese for Year Abroad
The class aims to build up skills in listening and speaking, while focussing on everyday life expression and paving a solid path to the Year Abroad in China/Taiwan.

Reading and Composition
The aim of this section of the course is to develop competence in reading original Chinese language works through simplified and traditional characters, and writing compositions in Chinese of up to 500 characters

Grammar
The class content is to summarise and review grammatical structures from a broader view.

Oral tutorials
In class, students will be encouraged to engage in communication and practice their listening and speaking skills. Topics may vary depending on the interests of each tutorial group.

Feedback Feedback will be offered regularly as part of learning process where appropriate, e.g. after an assignment or an assessment. Students are also encouraged to reflect upon their own learning, and make their own list of action points after each feedback session.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Read and understand short essays, fiction and select newspaper articles in simplified and traditional Chinese character forms to an intermediate level.
  2. Write summaries, essays and letters.
  3. Express their views and opinions on varied topics by participating in listening and speaking activities.
  4. Relate their knowledge to everyday contexts, using their skills to deal with straightforward tasks with some non-routine elements, and to prepare for familiar and routine tasks.
  5. Understand how Chinese grammar works and be able to apply these skills in reading and writing at intermediate level.

Additional Class Delivery Information Students will have 7 class contact hours per week. They include:
