| Summary | Literary and textual study in modern Chinese fiction and poetry.
All students will be given a formative feedback exercise that will be helpful for the assessment for this course and students' general ongoing academic development. |
| Course description |
This course presents an overview of Chinese literature through the 20th century up to the present day. Reading and analysing texts in Chinese, key trends will be covered, including the early New Culture Movement, the 1930s modernists, and 1980s avant-garde fiction. Lectures and discussions will touch upon the cultural, intellectual, and ideological debates shaping modern Chinese literature. Literary theory will be introduced, showing how texts can be analysed and framed in different ways. Class translations into English will focus as much on readability as the accuracy of the translation.

- Discuss the main trends in Chinese literature from the early 20th century to the present
- Employ various literary theories and approaches in analysing Chinese literature
- Translate a variety of Chinese literary texts into natural English
- Deal with both full-form and simplified Chinese characters
- Formulate and produce an essay on a chosen aspect of Chinese literature
