SummaryJapanese Language 3 is an online course that offers guidance and support on the students¿ language learning during their third year so that they can reach the advanced language levels.
Course description Students are required to undertake intermediate language study for a minimum of 30 weeks enrolled on courses at Edinburgh or at an approved institution of higher education in Japan.

The course aims to enable students to deepen their knowledge and understanding of Japanese language (developing their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening) and culture through the courses at Edinburgh or living and studying in Japan. Through various activities in courses at Edinburgh or the institutions in Japan, students consolidate their language knowledge as a preparation for their senior Honours year's study, which requires a high language proficiency up to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level C1.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. demonstrate competence in all four skill areas of Japanese language commensurate to JLPT level N2, or Common European Framework of Reference for Languages level C1
  2. engage in everyday activities in Japan
  3. take account of cultural conventions regarding politeness and register of speech when interacting with Japanese people in a range of situations
  4. speak confidently about complex subjects with detailed descriptions
  5. apply first hand knowledge of Japanese society and culture to their autonomous research projects

Study Abroad Students will take mid-intermediate to advanced level Japanese language tuitions from Edinburgh and/or be placed as exchange students at one of the University of Edinburgh's partner universities in Japan, where they will be enrolled for appropriate courses in Japanese language for non-native Japanese.
