SummaryResearch Skills and Methods for Asian Studies 1 will introduce students to critical concepts and basic skills required for students taking Asian Studies postgraduate degrees.
Course description Research Skills and Methods for Asian Studies 1 serves as a general introduction to academic practice in Asian Studies at postgraduate level. It will provide students with an introduction to the digital and physical resources available while studying at the University of Edinburgh; review and discuss some of the standards and practices of presenting academic work; address what is meant by critical thinking at postgraduate level; explore some of the software available to support the management of academic research; encourage the development of students' oral and written presentation skills; and situate students' development in the wider context of what it means to be working in Area Studies and to be a country or regional expert. The course will ensure that students taking postgraduate courses in Asian Studies are equipped with an understanding of the basic skills and expectations of academic practice during their first semester.
