Summary | Independent investigation of a research topic relating to biochemistry. The research is usually laboratory-based, but can include other topics, including science communication, teaching, computation etc. The project includes preparation of a research grant proposal, a dissertation, a short talk on your results, lab performance and a reflective portfolio. |
Course description |
Your research project will involve an investigation into a novel line of biochemical research. It will usually incorporate laboratory-based research, the outcomes of which will be presented in a research report and a short oral talk. In addition, a research proposal will extend the topic of your laboratory work and provide practice in design of a hypothetical experimental strategy. During your project, you will develop personal skills and attributes beyond the specific technical skills related to your project. You will also develop your understanding of the research process and an awareness of the issues involved in doing research, including ethics and health and safety. By recording activities and completing specific tasks, reflections and assignments in a reflective portfolio you will develop a greater awareness of the research process and the development of your skills and capabilities as the research project proceeds.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Research the background literature relating to a particular area of research.
- Safely and proficiently execute a subset of laboratory techniques related to the line of research.
- Develop and execute an experimental plan, and interpret the results of experiments.
- Present and discuss the results in two formats: a research talk and a short scientific written report or paper.
- Design and justify a hypothetical long-term research plan by preparing a grant proposal.
