| Summary | A proposal for the PhD project the student wishes to pursue in the PhD programme stage of the Wellcome Trust 4 year Programme in Hosts, Pathogens and Global Health. |
| Course description |
The students are required to prepare a dissertation and oral presentation describing the project they are proposing to carry out in years two to four of the Wellcome Trust Four Year PhD Programme in Hosts, Pathogens and Global Health.
They will be required to carry out in depth research into background and context of their proposed project, describe the realistic aims of the project, describe the techniques and methodologies that will employ, investigate the funding and resources (e.g. animal use) needed for the project and explore the potential impacts of their project.

Students will submit a written report on their PhD Project Proposal which will be graded by the project supervisor and Programme Training Committee.
Dissertations will include:
300 word summary paragraph including key goals
200 word lay summary describing project
2000 words describing main project proposal (including a maximum of 4 figures)
full citation of all references
300 word justification of resources requested
Students will present their PhD Project Proposals to their peers and the Programme Committee in a 15 min talk, allowing 5 min for questions. Committee members will prepare written feedback for the students based on both their talk and dissertation. Students will meet with Committee members one-on-one shortly after their oral presentation to discuss feedback and any other concerns.
The PhD Project Proposal course will be assessed out of 20 credits: 5 credits each will be awarded for:
project background, context, and aims
experimental approaches methods
project budget, resources, Pathways to Impact (including opportunities for public engagement)
presentation of dissertation and oral presentation
Marks will be awarded using the University of Edinburgh marking scheme.

As well as the assessment feedback outlined above, students will have regular meetings and feedback with their project supervisor during the preparation of the PhD Project Proposal. |
