Summary | This course aims to give you an understanding from the molecular mechanisms through the physiology and pathophysiology of conception, contraception, assisted reproduction, pregnancy and parturition, and female reproductive cancers. It will develop your understanding into the experimental in vitro and in vivo models, animal models and clinical trials. This will be set in the translational context of clinical issues in the fields of gynaecology, obstetrics, urology and neonatology |
Course description |
The course is made up of a series of lectures and workshops by clinical and science academics working in human and animal fertility/infertility and reproductive health. It is designed to facilitate an understanding of the physiological processes of pregnancy and birth, with awareness of the clinical issues and experimental models, and the clinical and laboratory aspects of assisted conception and fertility regulation, with an insight into clinical patient management.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Critically evaluate the physiological processes and underlying clinical problems and pathophysiology from conception, through implantation, pregnancy, labour, fetal development and in utero programming of the fetus that influences wellbeing in later life, and the adaptations the fetus undergoes at delivery
- Critically evaluate the science underlying established and novel methods of female and male contraception, and the common causes of male and female infertility and the limitations to our understanding of the causes of infertility, including in exotic animals
- Critically appraise findings arising from the main animal and in vitro models, and clinical and epidemiology methodologies used in pregnancy and parturition research
- Assimilate an overview of global reproductive health problems
- Synthesise your understanding and communicate on a reproductive issue, as a mini-poster and an oral PowerPoint presentation
