SummaryThe course is taught in two complementary strands, introducing students to the pronunciation, grammar and syntax of Early Irish, and training them to read edited Early Irish texts. After an introduction to the pronunciation of Early Irish and the development of reading skills, the course proceeds to study Early Irish texts with a greater emphasis on content and context.

This course is jointly taught with undergraduate students. PG students will receive at least one additional session of lecturer time in the form of a seminar or tutorial.

The course aims to provide students with a thorough grouding in the pronunciation, grammar and syntax of Early Irish, and the capacity to read edited Early Irish texts, as well as an introduction to the palaeographic, orthographic and textual background of these texts.
