Summary | This course aims to provide experience and training in activities that are important to professional chemists (including transferrable skills) and to the research process. This course consists of four modules that are assessed individually. |
Course description |
1. Data Handling and Statistics
The students will take lectures on data handling and statistics, which are followed by a tutorial and assessed coursework. The module contributes 20% of the course mark.
2. Scientific Presentation
Student groups of 3 or 4, investigate on a topic relevant to their studies and present their finding as a scientific presentation. The presentation contributes 30% of the course mark.
3. Literature Survey
In this exercise, students will learn to read and assess primary scientific literature critically and prepare a review article that is clearly and concisely written. The Literature Survey contributes 30% of the course mark.
4. Laboratory Techniques in Chemistry
Students will have exercises on various laboratory techniques relevant to their area of studt. This module contributes 20% of your course mark.

Other requirements | Pre-requisites : A 2.1 University Honours Degree or its equivalent in Chemistry or a closely related discipline, or with the permission of the Head of School.
Co-requisites : This course may only be taken as part of a Taught Postgraduate Masters degree in Materials Chemistry or Medicinal and Biological Chemistry.
Prohibited combinations : Graduates from Edinburgh University BSc (Hons) or MChem/MChemphys (Hons) degrees in Chemistry or Chemical Physics may only take this course with the approval of the Head of School. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Search the chemical literature on a chosen topic, and demonstrate a good critical understanding of the topic by summarising the findings in written form to a professional standard;
- Present, at a professional level, the results of an investigation in common scientific formats;
- Gain experience in team working, project planning and leadership skills in ways which show a clear awareness of his/her own and others' roles and responsibilities;
- Safely execute advanced experimental and analytical techniques used in physical, organic and inorganic chemistry, both singly and as part of a team;
- Use and apply common statistical procedures relevant to chemical data
