SummaryThis online course provides an introduction to psychological research design and methods within a developmental context.
Course description Discovering Development is suited to students with little or no prior training in psychological research and for students who are new to research with children and young people. The course provides the basics of quantitative and qualitative design; data collection methods, including how to adapt classic methods for use with children and adolescents in the clinical and general population; systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The course examines in some depth issues of ethics and consent in researching with children and young people.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a critical and contextualised understanding of the key issues in research design and ethics.
  2. Evaluate the appropriateness of different methods of primary/secondary data collection based on issues of design, analysis and population of interest.
  3. Demonstrate research literacy through critical appraisal and synthesis of research.
  4. Develop a viable research proposal that can demonstrate logical links between research questions, design and (primary/secondary) data collection.
