Summary | This course provides an opportunity for students registered for any of the research degree programmes within the Business School to pursue supervised reading on a topic relevant to the overall aims of that programme. |
Course description |
This course enables participants to develop their PhD proposal, specifically through engaging with important literature relevant to their thesis. Students will identity the eight core articles (or books) in their area and provide a comprehensive overview of this literature.
In a written report of 5,000 words (equating to around 200 hours of work), participants will provide a critical review of the chosen articles. The rationale for the choice of the articles should be provided. The critical review should examine (a) the background to the study, (b) the literature the article is seeking to contribute to, (c) the research gap addressed by the paper, (d) the methodology employed, (e) the central findings, (f) any opportunities identified for future research, (g) the broad reception of the article (e.g. through citation data). Each critical review should be approximately 500 words long, totalling approximately 4000 words. For the remaining 1000 words students should provide a critical reflection on what they have learned from the papers reviewed for their own research.
