Summary | The aims of this module are: 1) to explore the development of the person with particular reference to person-centred and psycho-dynamic perspectives; 2) to examine a variety of accounts of the origins and perpetuation of psychological difficulties; 3) to address the extent to which change and development is possible, with reference to the interplay of inner and outer worlds and the encounter with difference; 4) to clarify the meanings of the terms "self" and "person"; 5) to commence the practice placement and the work of the practice and process group. This is a core course only available to students undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling or the Master of Counselling (Interpersonal Dialogue). |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- reflect on key concepts relating to the development of the self drawn from both person-centred and psychodynamic theories of the self
- integrate recent research findings relating to narratives of the self which inform understanding and practice
- demonstrate and conceptualise an understanding of personal narratives of difference and diversity and how these might impact on counselling work
