Course description The aim of this course is to foster the development of students in counselling practice, increasing their self-awareness as reflective practitioners, their capacity to establish and develop effective counselling relationships with clients and fostering the development of the theoretical base which informs their practice.

This course is the first placement course for students on professional programmes in Counselling and Psychotherapy. Aligned with Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice 1, students undertake Counselling and Psychotherapy Placement 1 through the completion of 75 hours of psychotherapy and counselling practice with their own clients in an approved counselling placement agency and 15 hours of related practice supervision with an approved supervisor. It is assessed in relation to the core competencies for counselling and psychotherapy practice as laid down by the professional body.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. establish and maintain therapeutic relationships with clients.
  2. undertake effective assessment and contracting processes with new clients.
  3. engage reflectively and openly in supervision of practice, using feedback to enhance practice.
  4. work collaboratively with colleagues in a practice placement agency, including working effectively within the policies and procedures of the setting.
Reading List
Students reading will be focused in relation to their specific placement work, guided by both academic tutors and professional mentors and supervisors.
