Course description |
During Year 4, this course is intended to allow you to refine the clinical skills which have been acquired during Years 1-3. You will undertake your clinical sessions in primary care outreach clinics under the supervision of a number of clinical supervisors. This activity allows you to experience dentistry in a less academic environment which is intended to simulate a real life setting.
In the final semester of Year 4, all knowledge and clinical skills will be consolidated. Students will rotate to a different outreach centre to have the opportunity of experiencing a different patient base.

3.1 Communicate appropriately, effectively and sensitively at all times with and about patients, their representatives and the general public and in relation to:
* patients with anxious or challenging behaviour
* referring patients to colleagues, particularly where patients are from diverse backgrounds or there are barriers to patient communication
* difficult circumstances, such as when breaking bad news, and when discussing issues, such as alcohol consumption, smoking or diet

Additional Information (Assessment) |
Three Simulated Clinical Cases worth 100%
Periodontal, Adult restorative and Paediatric simulated clinical cases. To pass this examination overall, students must pass in two out of the three cases, AND have at least two passes in each domain that assessed. To pass a case, students must pass 3 out of 5 domains for that case. A resit of all three cases will be required if a student fails any of the cases.
Any 'unsafe to practice (U) grade in one or more of the domains for any of the simulated cases will result in an outright failure of the Clinical Practice examination, irrespective of any other outcomes

Effective feedback has benefits for the giver, receiver and the wider organisation and works best when it is a two-way process.
Constructive feedback is used to help the student formulate better decisions to improve and increase skills and performance. Students will have opportunities to give and receive feedback from peers, tutors, the wider dental team and patients with these opportunities for feedback arising within lectures, interactive group sessions and during clinical sessions.
Students are given one-to-one feedback from their Personal Tutor at their start of semester meetings, and at any other time during the semester that the student/PT requests.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Be competent at undertaking full and comprehensive diagnosis, treatment planning and management of all patients requiring treatment, within their scope of practice and with a greater degree of autonomy.
- Exhibit a high level of professional and ethical behaviour in keeping with that expected of a final year student
- Demonstrate clear and effective communication skills with patients, colleagues and peers.
- Be aware of conditions which may require surgical intervention and recognise the significance of the possible implications of surgical outcomes.
- Understand the significance of a team approach to head and neck surgery.
