SummaryThe aim of this course is to teach the student about the aetiology, prevalence, assessment and management of dental anxiety in children and adolescents using the most appropriate non-pharmacological and pharmacological behaviour management techniques.
Course description Understanding dental anxiety and behaviour management is essential in Paediatric Dentistry. This course aims to teach the student how to recognise and catagorise dental anxiety in a way that leads to the best behaviour management modality for each individual patient. Students are introduced to the national guidelines for management of anxiety with both pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Discuss the aetiology, prevalence and assessment of dental anxiety
  2. Discuss the non-pharmacological behaviour management techniques used in the United Kingdom (UK)
  3. Describe the use of local anaesthesia and procedural pain management in paediatric dentistry
  4. Discuss conscious sedation techniques used in the UK, including inhalation sedation, intravenous sedation and transmucosal sedation
  5. Discuss the indications, contraindications and decision making processes involved in referring children for treatment under General Anaesthesia
