SummaryThe aim of this course is to teach the student about the epidemiology, prevention and diagnosis of dental caries and periodontal disease in the child and adolescent.
Course description Dental caries is very prevalent in our population. Students are taught how to diagnose and treat dental caries in the most appropriate way for each child they come across. Epidemiology and prevention of dental disease is also explained in this course. Diagnosis and management of periodontal disease as well as the relationship between periodontal disease and systemic disease is also introduced.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Understand the epidemiology of dental disease
  2. Discuss the prevalence, risk factors, diagnosis and management of periodontal disease in the child and adolescent
  3. Identify the different methods available for the diagnosis of dental caries
  4. Explain the caries risk assessment process and be able to carry out a caries risk assessment for each individual patient
  5. Discuss the evidence base behind the prevention of dental disease and choose the most appropriate prevention method for individual patients
