| Summary | The aim of this course is to teach the student about the aetiology, prevalence, assessment and management of dental anxiety in children and adolescents using the most appropriate non-pharmacological and pharmacological behaviour management techniques. |
| Course description |
Understanding dental anxiety and behaviour management is essential in Paediatric Dentistry. This course aims to teach the student how to recognise and categorise dental anxiety in a way that leads to the best behaviour management modality for each individual patient. Students are introduced to the national guidelines for management of anxiety with both pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Conduct a thorough extra- and intra-oral examination in a manner which is appropriate to the age and stage of development of the child
- Apply non-pharmacological and behaviour management techniques used in the United Kingdom (UK) appropriately to their clinical practice
- Use local anaesthesia and procedural pain management in paediatric dentistry
- Contrast conscious sedation techniques used in the UK
- Evaluate the indications, contraindications and decision making processes involved in referring children for treatment under General Anaesthesia

The postgraduate will use initiative and will demonstrate self-motivation whilst developing the ability to be critical with respect to their own performance. The postgraduates will develop their skills in all aspects of Paediatric Dentistry, including diagnosis, treatment planning, clinical skills and all aspects of patient management |
