SummaryThe proposed Student-Led Individually Created Course (SLICC) will allow self-designed experiential learning whereby students reflect throughout their chosen topic by the development of an e-portofolio to provide evidence of their learning.
Course description The course will require the student to demonstrate the development of their abilities and understanding in terms of critical analysis, application, reflection, recognition, development of skills/ mindsets and evaluation within a defined context of the student learning experience. The course will enable the student to demonstrate autonomy, independent thinking and initiative at a professional level in either research or teaching/leadership/management.

Additional Information (Assessment) Learning outcomes will be assessed by three key components: (1) Coursework/Written Assessment in the form of a Final Reflective Report (100% weighting), (2) an E-Portfolio of Evidence (0%) and (3) formative Self-Assessment (0%).«br /»
(1) Self-critical Final Reflective Report (100%)«br /»
This report is the key component of the assessment. The student will be expected to document and demonstrate active self-critical reflection and responses to their learning throughout their experience. Their report should be linked to and draw upon their E-Portfolio of Evidence of their learning. The word count for the Final Report should be a maximum of 3000 words and will be assessed against the five learning outcomes.«br /»
(2) E-Portfolio of Evidence (0%)«br /»
At the proposal approval stage of the SLICC, the tutor/advisor will discuss and agree with the student the outputs and information which need to be created, collated and submitted in their portfolio. This e-portfolio will support and provide evidence of student learning and development of skills throughout their SLICC. The portfolio will be constructed throughout the duration of the student learning experience, demonstrating evolution, iteration and progress over time. The e- portfolio must include a regular reflective blog diary and should contain other evidence which may take many forms including photographs, documents, reports, feedback, video, podcasts, etc. The E-Portfolio of Evidence will be used to support the assessments of the five Learning Outcomes.«br /»
(3) Formative Self-Assessment (0%)«br /»
An important component of each student¿s final submission, in addition to their ability to self-critically reflect on their experience will be to demonstrate their understanding of their achievements through graded self-assessment. Within their "Self-Assessment" the student will be required to demonstrate the alignment of the grades given for each learning outcome, the justification for these and where this is evidenced within their e-portfolio.
Feedback Students will be given detailed formative feedback from their tutor at: (a) the stage of reflecting on what they wish to do and achieve during their project, whilst defining their own learning outcomes in their "Proposal" setting these effectively at the start is a key element in the SLICC process; (b) on their "Interim Reflective Report" which allows the student to reflect and act on this feedback prior to submission of the "Final Reflective Report", but will also be at a time to gain deep insight into and beneficially influence the progress of their project. The "Interim Reflective Report" will be in the same format as the "Final Reflective Report", so formative feedback is directly aligned with the final
summative assessment; (c) In addition, the student will also seek, recognise, gain, capture and curate, then act upon a wide-ranging and rich collection of feedback from multiple sources, throughout their SLICC. This will be an important theme in their e-portfolio of evidence of learning. The student will receive summative feedback from their tutor on their "Final Reflective Report".

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. Analysis: The student will be able to demonstrate that they have actively developed their criti cal overview and leading knowledge of the complexities, challenges and wider implications of the new, advanced and/or specialist context of the ir SLICC.
  2. Application: Recognising the new, advanced and/or complex setting of their SLICC, the student will be a ble to draw on and apply a significant range of advanced and specialised skills and attributes (academic, professional and/orrsonal) in order to demonstrate leadership and/or originality in tackling and resolving problems and issues whil st engag ing effect ively and critically with their SLICC, identifying where they need to improve these and/or develop new ones
  3. Recognising and Developing Skills: The student will be able to demonstrate how they will have used experiences gained during their SLICC to demonst rate an integrated approach to critically developing their advanced, specialist and/or complex skills in the focussed area o f: ¿ research and enquiry ¿ p ersonal and intellectual autonomy ¿ communication ¿ personal effectiveness The s tudent selects one from the four skills groups contained in the University¿s Graduate Attributes Framework: http://www.ed.ac.uk/employability/graduate - attributes] The student may need to add a specific skill of focus, e.g. ¿..i n the focussed area of personal effectivene ss, in particular teamwork.¿
  4. Recognising and Developing Mindsets: Recognising the new, advanced and/or complex setting of their SLICC, the student will be able to demonstrate how they have developed an ongoing, critical and integrated approach to using experiences during their SLICC to develop their mindset towards one of the following: ¿ enquiry and lifelong learning ¿ aspiration and personal development ¿ outlook and engagement Student selects one from the three mindsets contained in the University¿s Graduate Attributes Framework: http://www.ed.ac.uk/employability/graduate-attributes
  5. Evaluation: Recognising their new, advanced and/or complex setting of their SLICC, the student is able to demonstrate an integrated approach to evaluating and critically reflecting upon their approach, their learning, their development and their judgement throughout their SLICC.
Learning Resources
A number of online learning resources will be made available to the students. These will include guidance on reflective learning and reflective models, generation of specific focused learning outcomes from the generic learning outcomes, collecting and curating evidence of learning using an e-portfolio, writing reflective reports on learning and use of the PebblePad workbook etc.

Graduate Attributes and Skills On completion of this course the student will be able to demonstrate their abilities in self-critical reflection, organisation and time-management, self-assessment, evaluation of standards and competencies achieved, application of prior learning in a defined context and the ability to demonstrate analytical and presentation skills.
