SummaryStudents will have the opportunity to explore critical and contemporary debates used in the study of visual and material culture.
Course description This course introduces students to the defining characteristics and events of modernity and postmodernity and to the key critical concepts of modernism and postmodernism. It identifies and engages with the significant critical and aesthetic debates and creative practices that have shaped material and visual culture since the late nineteenth century. The specific aims of the Course are to enable you to acquire an understanding of the defining features of the evolution of material and visual culture since the late nineteenth century; to help you develop competence, imagination and understanding when applying key critical concepts relevant to the analysis and production of material and visual culture; and to support you in your investigation and analysis of some of the core issues that will establish a historical foundation for the development of your studio practice.
Entry Requirements (not applicable to Visiting Students)
Pre-requisites Students MUST have passed: Design Studio 1 (DESI07007) AND Design Research 1 (DESI07011) AND Design Context 1 (DESI07012) AND Design Collaboration 1 (DESI07009)
Co-requisites Students MUST also take: Design Studio 2 (DESI08007) AND Design Research 2 (DESI08011) AND Design Collaboration 2 (DESI08008)
Prohibited Combinations Other requirements This course is only available to ECA students on degree programmes belonging to Design.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
  1. RESEARCH: Use a variety of appropriate research approaches to show an understanding of visual images, artefacts, built environments and texts.
  2. ANALYSE: Demonstrate detailed knowledge of and critically engage with the main theories of cultural production.
  3. COMMUNICATE: Show initiative in managing and communicating your work through appropriate responses.
