| Summary | Students undertaking this course will develop essential skills in fashion garment technology, assembly and professional production techniques providing a solid skills base to enable students to explore and understand contemporary manufacturing methods and terminology used within the fashion industry to begin to create garments from the simplest to the more complex in detail. Skills will be acquired through tutor and technical demonstrations and practical step by step workshops where students can hone their skills creating samples and producing professionally finished garment prototypes. |
| Course description |
This course is designed as a method to build upon existing basic skills in fashion garment technology, introducing relevant construction techniques and specialist manufacturing and pressing equipment commonly used in the creation of contemporary fashion garments. It will appeal to any student interested in working with materials, wearables and products towards a resolved outcome.
Students undertaking this course will develop skills and knowledge of various garment assembly techniques and explore where and when these should be employed to produce professionally finished fashion garments covering a range of styles and fabric types.
These skills will be explored and developed through weekly tutor-led workshops and demonstrations where students will be guided through various step by step samples and techniques and have the opportunity to apply these new skills through the production of real creative design prototypes.
The course will culminate in the production of series of seam and garment samples, designed in response to students personal design research and ideas.
Students will also undertake research into fashion production methods, current innovations and applications through historical and contemporary fashion garment analysis acquiring knowledge of essential terminologies related to the industry
The key areas to be covered include:
Introduction to industrial sewing and pressing equipment and terminology
Seaming methods
Sewing techniques
Edge finishes for seams and hems.
Zip insertions
Waist finishes (bands, facing, elastic)
Assembling and attaching pockets, applied and inserted.
Neck finishes
Sleeve finishes
Domestic sewing machine overview of stitches, techniques and buttonholes
Understanding different fabric structures; weight and grain and interfacings (woven, knitted, heavy /sheer) and appropriate seaming methods
Simple garment pattern cutting and assembly, applying acquired skills and styling details to prototype garments.
Research and collation of construction techniques, methods and innovations, including garment analysis.

Other requirements | This course is open to ALL STUDENTS and enrolments are managed on a first come first served basis until the course is full. The course will be open to enrolments from Wednesday 11th September at 11.00 am. Please sign up for the course through your own School (they will advise if this is done via your PT, SSO or Teaching Office). We do not currently keep a waiting list. |
