| Summary | This course provides the grounding for focused exploration of the textiles discipline with an emphasis on drawing, mark-making, printed textile approaches and repeat pattern.
Textiles have a wide range of applications and require textile designers to be conversant with both current and past practices and to be adaptable to technology, trends and materials development.
An understanding of repeat structures and mechanisms, coupled with the confidence to create pattern and design croquis is an essential skill for all textile designers.
Through a series of briefs, this course challenges groups and individual students to explore established approaches and prompt innovative techniques in pattern making associated with the textiles discipline.
This course will reinforce learning from Core courses Textiles 1A and Textiles 1B, to allow the application of drawing, mark-making and image creation into practical exploration of colour, print and repeat pattern. |
| Course description |
This course builds technical competences in the practice of textile design through a series of tasks aligned to a range of techniques and associated textile focused pre-occupations, for example, print and repeat mechanisms for textile design, and colour/trend prediction. Students will have the opportunity to explore independent themes and personal directions within the framework of the design briefs.
The distinct but connected projects encourage students to build and reflect on their understanding of print technique and colouration of design and/or materials within the context of current practice in the field.
Introduction to the potential of textile print techniques, both analogue and digital, are embedded within the projects, encouraging students to explore and challenge methods and materials through practical exploration. Students will be supported in extending their technical competence in practical outcomes, which are aligned to current practice in the textiles industry.
Possible focuses for projects may align to the following or similar:
PROJECT 1 investigation, analysis and development of trends, colour and imagery
PROJECT 2 exploration of repeat pattern and print approaches
PROJECT 3 the bringing together of new understanding through resolved outcomes

| Pre-requisites | If this course is Core to your programme, you will automatically be enrolled. For all other Design students, the course is open on a first come, first served basis until the course is full. It is recommended that students would require a basic experience of textile technique and methods, for example, sketchbook work and drawing, preparation of artwork for print and basic photoshop skills. See the following courses for further guidance of experience equivalent to :- Textiles 1A, Textiles 1B. Please contact the Course Organiser if you wish to enrol. |

Formative Feedback and Assessment:
Formative presentations and submissions will take place at the end of each of the 3 projects that make up this course, with a combination of verbal and written feedback provided in response.
Written Formative Feedback and Formative assessment will be provided at the end of the second project to assist students to identify aspects of their final submission which may require further work before the summative submission.
