| Summary | The aim of this course is to closely examine how graphic narratives are constructed and used to tell stories as part of a pre-production process in animation, filmmaking, motion graphics and illustration. Through a combination of theory, research and practice, students will research case studies of their chosen discipline and create storyboards to a high standard appropriate for their specialism. The course is designed to form part of their MA pathway and provide a pre-production template for the work which will be carried out in their final projects. |
| Course description |
This course has been designed to develop a deeper understanding of the vital role of storyboards in the pre-production pipeline. Historically these documents have been used to supplement or illustrate screen plays, to support visual development, cinematography and layout and act as a blueprint for final creative outputs. Recognising that there is no current industrial standard, the course will support those newer to the subject areas by introducing examples of best practice. Those already familiar with their use will be supported to develop their style and practice in a more industrial, studio pipeline set-up. The students will be asked to critically assess a range of contemporary and historic examples through research and development of their own artistic practice and supporting contextual discussion.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate extensive and critical knowledge of the key principles of storyboarding in practice and theory.
- Apply a range of research and development skills to evaluate and create storyboards.
- Consolidate knowledge through critically reflective written and creative outputs.
