SummaryThis course provides you with a rich and varied understanding of the playful nature of graphic design and allows you to discover play, process and prototyping as a research and development tool.
Course description The course intends that you will develop a rigorous first-hand understanding of ethnographic research techniques and utilize these methods to offer a dynamic and original alternative to existing library or internet research. This will allow you to create a significant body of unique research and ultimately allows the beginning of an understanding which can be utilised to create publications, digital artefacts, poster design and all other forms of communication. This course is the bedrock of the MA in graphic design and provides the critical building blocks for projects within the wide framework offered in contemporary graphic design.

Additional Information (Assessment) Formative: A Pecha Kucha Presentation of your work to your peers and lecturers at the mid-point of the course with verbal feedback.

Summative Assessment:
LO1 - A personal research blog containing all research and development with a minimum of 40 research posts.(33%)
LO2 and LO3 - A multi-page personal portfolio containing an annotated summary of your research and development journey and a fully resolved body of work resulting from this research development process. The portfolio should contain a minimum of 40 pages including a reflective statement of 250 - 500 words examining your process and outcomes (pdf format).(67%)

Feedback Formative feedback is regularly communicated throughout the course. This takes a number forms, verbally through weekly group discussion, class crits with peers and specialist practioners and a mid semester individual 1:1 meetings where work and ideas are discussed with your tutor.

Summative Feedback - At the end of the Course you will be given written feedback and summative grades within 15 working days.

Graduate Attributes and Skills You will gain knowledge and understanding of the ways in which Graphic Design is developed, including a range of established techniques of enquiry and research methods.

You will use a wide range of the principal professional skills, techniques, practices and materials associated with Graphic Design.

You will critically identify, define, conceptualise and analyse complex problems and issues.

You will demonstrate a critical awareness of current issues in your subject/discipline/sector and one or more specialisms.

You will apply knowledge and skills in planning and executing a significant project of research, investigation or development.

You will develop the ability to work in a group with staff and peers to engage in a series of creative exercises within a Graphic Design studio (Work alongside and with peers, senior colleagues and specialists in the field).

You will analyse facts and situations and apply creative thinking to develop the appropriate solutions
