Summary | You will work on a series of projects during which you will collect and analyse research that is creatively informed and critically aware. You will develop creative concepts through integrated iterative processes incorporating making, evaluating, presenting and reflection. |
Course description |
The course will focus on two core design research methodologies, analysis and synthesis, and how these apply to the graphic design discipline. You will explore these two fundamental research processes and how they relate to each other, as well as your own personal practice. The course aims to encourage you to use these research methodologies to produce work that addresses the role and impact of your practice as graphic designers in society's larger picture, with a deeper sense of critical awareness.

Formative: A Pecha Kucha Presentation of your work to your peers and lecturers at the mid-point of the course with verbal feedback.
Summative Assessment:
LO1 - A personal research blog containing all research and development with a minimum of 20 research posts. 33%
LO2 and LO3 - A multi-page personal portfolio containing an annotated summary of your research and development journey and a fully resolved body of work resulting from this research development process. The portfolio should contain a minimum of 20 pages including a reflective statement of 250 - 500 words examining your process and outcomes (pdf format).67%
Each Learning Outcome is equally weighted, and therefore comprises 33.33% of overall final course grade.

Feedback |
Formative feedback is regularly communicated throughout the course. This takes a number forms, verbally through weekly group discussion, class crits with peers and specialist practioners and a mid semester individual 1:1 meetings where work and ideas are discussed with your tutor.
Summative Feedback at the end of the Course you will be given written feedback and summative grades within 15 working days.

You will use a wide range of the principal professional skills, techniques, practices and materials associated with Graphic Design.
You will critically identify, define, conceptualise and analyse complex problems and issues.
You will explore their own choice of specialism within the broad field of Graphic Design and you will create, identify and evaluate options in order to solve complex problems.
You will develop the ability to work in a group with staff and peers to engage in a series of creative exercises within a Graphic Design studio (Work alongside and with peers, senior colleagues and specialists in the field).
