Summary[This course does not operate a waiting list. You can contact the Course Secretary in Week 1 in January to check if any spaces have become available]

Introduction to European Cinema will give students a historical and theoretical introduction to the study of film and cinema. It will present the development of film in Europe from its beginnings to the present, together with an introduction to the spectrum of critical reaction and aesthetic evaluation that has accompanied the medium throughout its existence.
Course description Introduction to European Cinema will cover a broad sweep of European film history with a consideration of cinema in a number of countries. We look at a wide and changing range of films but often cover films from Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Britain, Scandinavia, and (former) Soviet Bloc countries. We place these within the context of broader historical and aesthetic developments in Europe. The course covers the various new waves of the 1960s and some contemporary European film. The course also provides an introduction to the study and criticism of film more generally.

Please note that this course now runs in Semester 2 only.
