Summary | A course for beginners with no previous knowledge of German, designed to give absolute beginners a basic, working knowledge of spoken and written German.
1. Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed. All students must take all elements of assessment.
2. Students will be allocated into a group. Each group has two classes, which run twice a week. You must be able to attend both.
3. Students with previous knowledge of the language are not permitted and may be asked to withdraw from the course.
This course runs in semester 1 only
On successful completion of the course students will be eligible to take Foundation German Language 2 (ELCG07008) (20 credits), which follows on from Foundation German Language 1. |

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of concrete needs; understand simple personal questions when people speak slowly and clearly.
- achieve German language competence comparable to the CEFR Level A1/1+: introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has; understand short simple texts regarding personal information; write about him/ herself, using short, simple phrases.
- produce and read texts on basic everyday themes; engage in listening, spoken and written language activities at A1/1+ level.
- develop critical skills to ensure the use of reliable language resources both printed and/or digital (e.g. bilingual dictionaries, grammar books, translation tools).
- take responsibility for independent vocabulary acquisition and grammatical study, and for monitoring one¿s engagement in German language activities outside of the classroom (eg. online resources, extra learning materials available from LEARN, main library, DVD library).
