| Summary | A course for beginners with no previous knowledge of Spanish, designed to give complete beginners a basic, working knowledge of spoken and written Spanish.
1. Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed. All students must take all elements of assessment, including the examination.
2. Students will be assigned a group and each group has two classes a week. You must be able to attend both classes in order to take the course.
3. Students with previous knowledge of the language are not permitted and may be asked to withdraw from the course.
This course runs in semester 1 and semester 2.
On successful completion of the course students will be eligible to take Foundation Spanish 2.

| Course description |
Foundation Spanish Language 1 is intended for complete beginners and aims to equip students with a basic grounding in written and spoken Spanish. At the end of this course, students should reach approximately level A1/1+ on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Students who pass the course will be eligible to continue studying Spanish in Foundation Spanish Language 2 (ELCH07010).

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Ask and answer basic questions and formulate and respond to simple statements about immediate need or on very familiar topics.
- Process concrete information and follow speech on familiar topics encountered in everyday life, provided it is delivered in slow and clear speech in a familiar accent.
- Understand short and simple texts on very familiar topics.
- Compose very simple descriptive texts in Spanish using the present tense.
- Describe basic cultural differences, stereotypes, and everyday situations.
