Summary | An intensive course of tuition in spoken and written Spanish for students with no or little previous knowledge of the language. A general introduction to the history and culture of the Hispanic world, together with the study of two appropriate texts and/or films. The course is open to students of any year, but not to students qualified for admission to Spanish 1B. A good deal of private study is necessary to meet the requirements of the course. Auditing (Class Only) is not allowed. |
Course description |
To provide a firm grounding in Spanish language, both written and oral, with a view to preparing potential Honours students for living and either studying or working in a Spanish-speaking country during their third year. To provide an understanding of some important literary and cultural issues relating to the countries where Spanish is spoken.

Other requirements | If your entry qualification for Spanish is a Scottish Higher, you will automatically be admitted to 1B. Students with a 'crash' Higher OR a Higher awarded more than 1 year ago will be registered on Spanish 1B, but may take a Proficiency Test to gauge their ability. The Proficiency Test will be available on the course Learn page and should be completed by 17th September and emailed to the Course Organiser for assessment.
Depending on the results, course registration would be changed to Spanish 1A. Students with a 'C' pass at Higher (SQA) or A-level may be considered for entry to 1A at the discretion of the Course Organiser.
Other students whose qualifications in Spanish are more than 3 years old may also take the Proficiency Test to determine whether Spanish 1A or 1B would be more appropriate.
The test will be available online on Learn and students are required to complete it by Friday 18th September.
Please note that changing from 1B to 1A is not allowed in any other circumstances, and is not possible after week 2 of semester 1.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- The student will be able to understand the main points of the Spanish language grammar with strong input on vocabulary and familiar matters of day to day living.
- The student will be able to understand and express themselves in the target language and deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
- The student will be able to produce a spontaneous written essay connected to the topics learned on the course.
- The student will be able to describe personal experiences and events, briefly giving reasons and explanations for opinions and future plans.
- The student will be able to achieve basic analytical skills through a literature composition.
